C'est un nom que les Poëtes ont donné à des habitans de Sicile, qu'ils ont feint estre des ouvriers qui travailloient sous Vulcain pour forger les foudres de Jupiter, & qui avoient fait les armes d'Achille & d'Enée. Ils ont été ainsi nommés, parce qu'ils n'avoient qu'un oeuil rond au milieu du front. Ulysse fut long-temps engagé dans la caverne du Cyclope Polypheme. Ce mot vient de kyklos, circulus, & de ops, oculus.
