Historical definition of PROXENETE s. m. & f.
Courtier, Entremetteur d'un marché. On donne ce nom aux honnestes Entremetteurs qui font vendre des offices, qui font des mariages ou autres affaires. Le Droit Romain donne action aux Proxenetes pour leurs salaires, Titre XIV. du Livre L. sf. De Proxeneticis, & le Titre XI. du V. Livre du Code.
