Historical definition of GASTINE subst. fem.

Terre vaine, vague & inculte. On appelle en Poictou, Berry, & autres Provinces, Gastine, ce qu'on appelle en Guyenne Landes, un pays estendu, desert & sterile. C'est ce qui a donné autrefois le nom au Gastinois. Il est en usage en Venerie. Voy Fouillous. Du Cange derive ce mot de gualdus & gualtina, qui dans la basse Latinité signifioit forest, d'où on a fait d'abord gaudine, & puis gastine.
