Historical definition of REBEC s. m.
Vieux mot qui signifioit autrefois violon à trois cordes, & qui est, à vray dire, un violon imparfait. Ses cordes sont accordées de quinte en quinte. On menoit autrefois les espousées à l'Eglise avec le rebec & le tabourin. Menage tient que ce mot vient de l'Espagnol rabel, qui est pris de l'Arabe rebab ou rebaba, qui signifie la même chose. Borel dit qu'il vient de Hebreu rebiac, qui signifie sistrum. Mais plûtost il vient de rebet, qui en langage Celtique ou Bas-Breton signifie violon, & rebeter, sonner du violon.
